Packing Your Self Storage Unit: Tips For Staying Organized

Keeping your self storage unit organized is an important part of your ability to find the items you need without spending hours digging through boxes or moving heavy furniture out of the way. Unfortunately, in an attempt to fit as much into their unit as possible, far too many people forget about the importance of organization when packing their storage unit. Thankfully, the tips below can help you to enjoy the best of both worlds by effectively fitting all of your items into a single storage unit while still allowing you easy access to the items you need.

Tip #1: Use Colored Paper To Label Your Boxes

Colored paper can be used to create an affordable and easy-to-see label system for all of the boxes you will be storing. Begin by assigning a different color of paper to each category of items you plan on storing. For instance, you may wish to use a sheet of orange paper to identify fall decor, and a green sheet of paper to identify summer clothes. Next, create a master list of all the colors and their meanings. This list should be taped inside the door of your storage unit so that you can easily be reminded of what each color stands for as the months go by.

As you pack each box, make note of the general contents of the box on an appropriately colored sheet of paper. Finally, use packing tape or other heavy duty tape to secure the label on the side of the box. When you return to retrieve an item from your storage unit, you will be able to easily locate the boxes that will most likely contain this item by simply looking for the correct color label.

Tip #2: Create Aisles Within Your Storage Unit

One of the biggest problems that people face when trying to remove a particular item from their storage unit is the ability to remove something from the back of the unit without first removing the items in front of it. This process can be extremely time consuming and labor intensive. The good news is, there is a simple way to avoid this problem all together.

When packing your storage unit, be sure to leave an aisle on both sides of the unit that can be used to move from the front to the back of the unit without removing anything from the unit. In order to ensure these aisles are large enough to safely remove furniture and boxes from the unit, take a moment to walk from the front of the unit all the way to the back with an appliance dolly. If you are able to safely navigate through the unit, one like Liberty Self Storage, with the dolly in hand, you will be able to safely access your items in the future.
